Self-assessment questions help check your understanding and provide immediate feedback to see how well you have done. As well as his publications in the field of education, he has written seven books of Christian drama for young people and a Christmas musical (published by Church House/National Society). Worked examples of calculation methods are combined with useful insights into essential prior knowledge and understanding. As part of my PGCE I purchased many books - this one being 1 of 3 that I actually use for my teaching. Reasoning and Problem-solving questions encourage you to use and apply mathematical concepts in solving mathematical puzzles or problems in real life situations. This provides further practice for our students to be able to strengthen their subject knowledge, in preparation for teaching key areas of the National Curriculum. Haylock and Manning's latest edition of this publication is still not improved enough in the numeracy section for me to recommend this to students. This is done while still ensuring that children are able to meet the demands of the new National Curriculum. The self-assessment tasks and suggestions for further reading should ensure that teachers feel well prepared to teach the mathematics contained in the book.

A Student Workbook is also available to accompany this book, including over 700 practice problems to help you understand, apply and teach primary mathematics. There are also simple exercises you can complete yourself to test your knowledge after reading each section. Lesson Plan Activities by Ralph Manning support content-focused chapters and contain creative mathematics tasks across the primary age range. Here is another accessible text from Derek Haylock that supports the development of subject knowledge for student teachers and experienced teachers alike. A group of friendly jungle animals gently guide them through each topic, and tricky concepts are broken into easy-to-follow steps to help build confidence.

Every chapter integrates children’s learning, classroom practice, and teacher’s own requirements for subject knowledge, making this the ideal text to guide you through your studies and beyond.Links to the National Curriculum specify the statutory requirements for primary schools in England that relate to the mathematical content of each chapter. Learning and Teaching points highlight important issues you may face in the classroom and provide practical guidance for teaching. Fully aligned to the primary National Curriculum for maths, Times Tables Ninja features an introduction for teachers explaining the Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) approach and the vocabulary to use when teaching times tables. There is a growing awareness in primary schools of this book being an asset for all members of staff no matter whether they have two or twenty-two years of classroom experience. Easily understood for someone who didn't like maths at school and has to now teach it (and it's my favourite subject to teach!

His other specific interests are in developing children’s higher thinking skills, assessment for learning and planning for teaching effectively. The inclusion of a section on using addition to check subtraction is well explained - this is a useful addition to the fifth edition. This book can rightly be considered the ultimate reference for securing appropriate mathematics subject knowledge for primary teaching. This Student Workbook reinforces and applies concepts introduced in Derek Haylock's Mathematics Explained for Primary Teachers. The teaching points throughout help to draw relevant links between theory and practice and the self-assessment questions focus on developing teachers’ own content and pedagogical content knowledge. During his first in school placement, as he was with yr 6 students, he found this an invaluable resource as he hadn’t studied any primary maths teaching in his first year of study at university.

Haylock approached mathematical concepts in very approachable language and if it's not your strong point (like me), this is a great way of bettering your understanding. Haylock emphasises the importance of teaching written methods with understanding and one key strategy he exemplifies to achieve this is the use of representation. With detailed solutions, explanatory notes and tightly mapped to the main book, the Student Workbook gets students practicing what they've learnt to help build confidence. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. Ralph led the mathematics and physical education programmes for the Primary PGCE at the University of East Anglia until 2013. Including six sections: Grammar and Punctuation, Spelling, Comprehension, Multiplying, Dividing and Times Tables. Questions and quizzes: Achieve a firm grasp of concepts and a clear understanding with self-assessment questions and quizzes.
