[ Google Scholar] Cyperus ( Cyperus alternifolius) is the plant to grow if you never quite get it right when you water your plants, as it requires a constant moisture at the roots and cannot be overwatered. The tall stems have umbrellas of radiating bracts that look like leaves (the true leaves clasp the stem so closely you can hardly see them), giving the plant an oriental appearance. Since this plant is an aquatic species, it needs to have the roots as wet as possible. In fact, leaf tips become brown if the roots become even slightly dry. One way to achieve this is to put the potted plant inside another pot with water at the root level. Use a planting mix rich in peat to provide an acidic medium. Pod označením Gooliwoog se prodává jako doplňkové krmivo určené pro široké spektrum domácích mazlíčků (kočky, také morčata, králíky, ještěrky, hady, ptáky, aj.). Gooliwoog je užitečná také proti patogenním mikroorganismům. Údajně povzbuzuje činnost imunitního systému.

Earlier studies on phytochemical constituents of C. rotundus revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, phenols, tannins, steroids, starch and many novel sesquiterpenoids (Harborne et al. 1982; Umerie and Ezeuzo 2000; Kapadia et al. 1967; Trivedi et al. 1984; Sivapalan and Jeyadevan 2012). Sesquiterpene hydrocarbons such as cypera-2,4(15)-diene, isorotundene, norrotundene and the oxygenated compound cyperadione were isolated and identified by Sonwa and Konig ( 2001). Tsoyi et al. ( 2011), reported the anti-inflammatory activity of sesquiterpenes such as nootkatone and valencene isolated from the rhizome of C. rotundus.
