About this deal

We know it's exciting, but before you get shopping, here are some things you should look for when finding right one for you. Since I cut my hair into a bob, I pretty much always wear it straight... but I legit despise having to blow dry, then flat iron my hair. Enter: Shark's SmoothStyle hair-dryer brush. It uses hot air to help dry my hair, just like all of the other blow-dryer brushes on this list, but the design of the bristles really lends itself to detangling, smoothing, and styling my hair.

An upgrade on the popular Revlon One-Step Volumiser, the Plus model claims to give you 50 percent less heat exposure and has the technology built in to create shinier results. It’s aimed at those who want to easily create a bouncy blow dry at home and we found it fuss-free and easy to use. It measured around the 90-decibel mark on its highest setting, so can get quite noisy, though. It's also worth looking for something with a cool-shot setting: this will help set your style after you've dried it, and smooth those cuticles down, too. Also, most dryers today will come with a range of temperature, speed and power settings so you can adjust your blow-drying experience to suit your hair type. Interestingly, some of the most coveted hair dryers this year are from Dyson and its American competitor Shark, both better known for their cordless vacuum cleaners. Big name GHD could not quite match their results. We also tested some lesser-known brands for a range of budgets and hair types. If you’re pushed for time, here are the top five: At a glance - the best hair dryers of 2023 Timothy agrees: “Although it’s expensive, it really does do what it says. The size of the diffuser attachment takes just the right amount of hair. The airflow balance is also ideal if your hair is smoother and you want some more movement in the roots. The flyaway attachment adds a smooth finish to blow drys.”We did find the attachments well designed and useful, however. These include a diffuser, concentrator nozzle and brush-style head – the latter of which is ideal for blow drying hair straight and adding bounce. The dryer features ‘iQ Technology’ that aims to intelligently generate high-velocity heated and ionised air for fast drying with no heat damage, increasing smoothness and shine and reducing frizz and fly-aways. With their ‘Great Hairdryer’, Hershesons claim to have found ‘the lightest, most powerful and efficient dryer on the market’. It comes in a blue tin box with a diffuser, two concentrator nozzles and a stand included and at 295g, it weighs less than a can of Coke – compare this to the 659g Dyson Supersonic or the 730g Shark STYLE iQ Ionic. It’s also very slim. This makes it a great travel companion, as well as limiting arm-ache when you’re using it. With a keratin infused tourmaline coated grille to help protect the hair and give a shinier and silkier finish. Most stylists would recommend a wattage of at least 2000W to thoroughly dry your lengths, although the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer is the exception with just 1,600W – but the clever digital motor technology still ensures a powerful dry.

If you’re wanting a little more, some will come with a range of attachments – from diffusers to nozzles – which help to dry your hair at a faster speed, define curls or smooth down frizzy flyaways.

It has a mix of plastic and tufted, boar-style bristles on one half of the tool that you've come to expect with a hair-dryer brush. But on the sides of the oval-shaped tool are ceramic-coated teeth that heat up and really help smooth out my hair to give me a sleek look. Plus, I can use the dry mode afterward to get my hair even sleeker, all from one tool. Hotjar sets this cookie to identify a new user’s first session. It pays to hone in on the details. For a start, you need to make sure you have the right attachments to suit your hair type - such as a suitable diffuser to calm frizzy hair, or a concentrator nozzle to achieve your style. Inside the box you get five attachments as standard, including the new Frizz flyaway attachment which works to create smooth, shiny hair. Without it, we found the Supersonic can leave hair texture feeling a little too light and fluffy once dry, so its a worthy inclusion. Timothy’s client Emma (pictured above), who has Type 3 curls, loves the diffuser attachment Timothy used. “I’d use a hair dryer like this at home,” she says. “There are four precise heat settings ranging from 100°C to 28°C. That, plus a good balance of air flow, helps to protect my hair from burning.”

Avoid excessive colouring. One of the biggest problems I see is unnecessary, excessive colour damage - either too much colour or repeated over and over on the same hair. This leaves it thin, fragile and dull. Find a colourist that cares about hair health and who wants your hair to look its best for as long as possible, rather than making you return asap to spend again." This hair dryer emits ‘Nanoe’ as you use it - a technology developed by Panasonic that claims to hold 1,000 times more moisture than ions, to deeply enrich your hair to help reduce damage. They claim 88 percent of users noted a visible improvement in split ends after five weeks of using it. The Hersheson gives you three temperatures, three speed levels and a cool shot. ‘It’s very quiet and the attachments are good,’ Timothy says. ‘I particularly like the diffuser, which was great for curly and wavy hair. A sophisticated hair dryer with a premium feel, the STYLE iQ comes with three temperature and three air flow settings for flexibility, similar to the Dyson. It’s similarly shaped, too. But it didn’t feel as light or comfortable in hand, especially with the attachments added. It’s also possibly a little too bulky and loud for use on children, measuring 88 decibels on its highest setting. You also get styling concentrator that gives you controlled airflow and a diffuser that helps to reduce frizz and simulate natural drying. You can add the gentle air attachment when drying fine hair and sensitive scalps and use the wide-tooth comb attachment that’s specifically designed for coily and afro hair. Make sure you're using maximum tension with the hair-dryer brush and move slowly down the shaft of your hair in a 'C' shape motion," says hairstylist Andrés Melendez. If you want extra volume near your face (hi, curtain bangs), direct sections of the hair out and away from the face. It will probably take you a few times to truly ~nail~ the technique, but trust, it gets easier. Choose the bristle type.
