About this deal

While you wont find it in the rulebook anywhere, what happens next is that everyone talks through all their thoughts. No matter the role, everyone has plenty of thoughts to share at the end of the game. The forensic scientist will then discard their clue and means cards and take the evidence tiles and shuffle them leaving the green and purple ones off to the side. The remaining tiles will be face down in a pile next to the forensic scientist. They will also get the rule book to read from the script provided. Badge Tokens

We’ve played Deception as a family, at Guys Game Night, and over the Labor Day weekend with extended family. And because it’s been such a hit, we can’t seem to stop playing. Deception was a hit at Guys Game Night. Police arrested a total of 448 youngsters on suspicion of committing criminal offences, which decreased by 37.5 per cent compared to the same period last year. Among those arrested, 84 were rounded up in connection with triad-related crimes, while 58 were suspected to be involved in cases of wounding and serious assault. Fifty-four youngsters were apprehended for alleged criminal damage, and 52 youth suspects were arrested over serious drug offences.

Roles

Investigators must collaborate and use their wits, their hunches, and their keen deductive insight to correctly identify the means of murder and the key evidence to convict the killer. The murderer must mislead and confuse the investigators to save themselves. Do you have what it takes to see through the lies and catch the criminal in your ranks or will they muddy the waters long enough to get away with murder? To give a clue, the Forensic Scientist will place one bullet on each tile. He’ll place it next to a word on each tile that will help the Investigators select the correct pair of cards in front of the Murderer. Find out who among you can cut through deception to find the truth and who is capable of getting away with murder!

The Witness is an optional role when playing with the Accomplice. The Witness is an Investigator who has witnessed the culprits leaving the crime scene. The Forensic Scientist should give the group a moment to discuss the new evidence before again calling on each player to present their opinions as in step 2a-II. When an Investigator does that successfully, the crime is solved and the Forensic Scientist and the Investigators win the game. To replace a tile, remove the marker and discard the tile. The newly drawn tile goes in the empty space and the Forensic Scientist places the previous marker on one of the six items listed on the new tile.

It’s important, therefore, to have a very frank discussion beforehand, making it super clear that there is a social contract involved in these games. And, if you do even the tiniest thing to reveal your identity in a way not in keeping with the spirit of the game, the whole thing becomes a waste of time. Having played it so many times in such a short period of time, you might think we’d be burned out. But we’re not!The new Event tile should be used in the same way as the original Event tiles. Use of the Event tile remains optional. Like the new Clue and Means cards, these can simply be combined with the original Scene tiles from the base game. The new Scene tiles give the Forensic Scientist new options for describing the crime scene. If either of the cards is incorrect, the Forensic Scientist will only say "No" without giving any additional information. This is the bulk of the game and is made up of three Investigation rounds. If the Investigators haven’t identified the Clue and Means cards by the end, the Murderer wins. A round has these two phases:

The player receiving the Forensic Scientist card reveals; their identity and acts as the game master. They discard their Clue and Means cards and will play using the Scene tiles instead. All the other players keep their roles secret. Deception has been such a hit in our family that it’s shot past a ton of other games on our “to review” shelf. Deception in Hong Kong is a murder mystery game where one of the players is the murderer. Players will each have one secret roll from an investigator, witness, accomplice, or the murderer. Depending on what role you get changes your win condition. When playing with the Protective Detail, the Forensic Scientist will need to inject the following into their setting up of "The Crime" after they have identified the Witness: "Protective Detail, open your eyes". Forensic Scientist (1): The forensic scientist is the player that will lead the other players through the game and give out clues to catch the murder. The forensic scientist wins with the investigators but must be an unbiased character. They know who everyone else is and the means and clue for the murder, but the forensic scientist is not permitted to hint at or give away the answer to the investigator with any gesture, verbal clue, or eyes. It’s not because the game is a short game. Rather it’s because everyone has enjoyed it so much that we just have to play “one more time.” After each player has had a chance to present their opinions, the Forensic Scientist moves on to the second round of Evidence Collection. Deception: Murder in Hong Kong brings together all the best aspects of a social deduction game to create a fast-paced and fascinating whodunnit.
