About this deal

For the first time ever, it has embedded what it called 'Active Comfort Technology'. This sits below the Vectran Breaker, and apparently without affecting rolling resistance, dampens buzz and vibration. Because the general thinking is that rolling resistance of a tire decreases as it wears, and our results are so counterintuitive, we've performed extra tests that we think proof our results are correct. Indoors on the rollers, however, my testing showed a small but consistent rolling resistance advantage to a set of lightly used GP5000 TL tyres. NOTE: As of 2021, we've improved the puncture resistance tests and now provide 'Total Puncture Score' as the main puncture resistance indicator. If the text below mentions puncture resistance, we're referring to 'Puncture Force Sharp Needle' which was our original test. There are so many significant differences between the Grand Prix 5000 S TR and its TL predecessor that Continental could easily have designated the new version Grand Prix 6000. The headline changes are:

Finally, we subjected the tyres to a series of test rides in the real world, to judge their subjective ride quality, grip levels and comfort. Tyres on test Unlike the front tire, the rear tire stretched a bit more and now measures 32.7 mm wide on a 17C rim, inflated to 100 psi / 6.9 bars. Weight also has gone down a bit more which confirms the higher wear rate of the rear tire. Continental says the AS TR is the "strongest ever Grand Prix 5000 tyre," thanks to an improved tread pattern, multi-layer overlapping ply construction, and increased sidewall protection. The result, Conti says, is an increase in wet-weather grip, more puncture protection and better durability than any other GP5000 it has made. We'll run these for another 620 miles / 1000 km at which point we'll evaluate if it might be wiser to try another brand(s) to see if we see the same pattern with other tires as well. to warm everything up so the 23-622 has run for at least 60 km and the 25-622 somewhere around 500 km.

After a season of testing on UK roads in Surrey and Kent, I found the tyres rolled well. I could push into the corners with confidence even on wet and greasy days, though they were tougher than a thoroughbred race tyre. Schwalbe’s Pro One TT tyre (seen here in a 700 x 25c size) is lighter and more delicate than the GP5000 S TR, but is designed purely for time trials. Simon von Bromley / Immediate Media Vectran Breaker: Vectran is a synthetically manufactured high-tech fibre from a natural model. Like

the front tire and can still be seen on the rear tire when you really look for it. The casings of both tires also still look like brand new. These measurements will give us valuable information about how the tires behave over their entire life cycle. We do have to consider that the sent-in samples all were of the 25-622 size, and the smaller tires will wear down a (relative) wider part of the tread at a faster rate. This is also a trend we see with our 28-622 and 32-622 versions of the Grand Prix 5000, with the bigger size showing a bigger increase in rolling resistance. The tubeless tyre is available in 25, 28 and 32mm widths — the idea of a 32mm tubeless tyre with GP 4000-like performance is a genuinely exciting prospect and this is one I’m really looking forward to trying out. Grand Prix 5000 that was in storage. It's very well possible this increase of 2.0% is partly because the tire has run for an extra 20-40 km between these measurements. Though my test runs with the GP5000 S TRs were on average one second faster than those with the GP5000 TL, that represents only a 0.3 per cent difference in total average climb time. Continental also claims that the new tyres are easier to fit. As someone who's fitted hundreds of tyres over the years, I'd like to think I'm a dab hand, but the outgoing TLs caused me plenty of headaches – and broken tyre levers too on certain wheels. These new ones slipped easily onto a set of tubeless Scribe Race-Ds (19mm internal width), but when it came to a late-season race I thought I'd switch them to a pair of Hunt 50 Carbon Wides (also 19mm internal width). Without help from a mate, I don't think I'd have got the tyres on, so there are still clearly a few issues with certain combos.

Lighter, Faster and with stronger sidewalls... The new standard in road tubeless ready technology - now compatible with hookless rims.A tyre can skim over tarmac like a knife to butter, but it'll leave you with bloody thumbs and a lot of rage if you can't fit it by the roadside. Even though the rear GP 5000 has slightly more wear, rolling resistance of the rear 32-622 GP 5000 has also gone up by 5 - 9 %. It looks like the rubber compound has already lost some This time around, the rear 32-622 GP5000 shows a decreased rolling resistance when compared to the last measurement at 2380 miles / 4000 km. Maybe we've now reached the point where rolling resistance starts to go down again which would be nice to see. Active Comfort: The revolutionary approach in cycling. Embedded in the tyre construction the Active Comfort Technology absorbs vibrations and smoothens your ride. It's still available from some retailers but the Grand Prix 5000 TL has been nominally replaced by the Grand Prix 5000 S TR. We'll keep these details until retailers run out.

With that said, unlike Schwalbe, Continental will not be releasing compatibility charts for the new GP 5000. The interesting thing with the Grand Prix 5000 is something we can't see from the outside. When looking at our results of both the 28-622 on the front, and the 32-622 on the rear, it's obvious that you're wearing these tires out in a different way. No punctures yet, so nothing new there as well. We're curious to see how the puncture resistance holds up over the following updates as the tread of the rear tire now is getting thinner and small pieces of glass will get a better chance of cutting through the casing. I personally think that, given the testing has already been carried out, it’s a real shame that Continental is choosing not to share this data; transparency is in vogue and it would undoubtedly be beneficial to consumers. Will the pros be riding tubeless tyres? After the first 620 miles / 1000 km, both the front 28-622 and rear 32-622 still look brand new. The mold line that runs through the middle of the tire is still easily visible onSo, what are they like to ride? The old ones were some of the fastest tyres that money could buy, and these new TRs have already been ridden by Fillipo Ganna to world championship TT success, although I have a sneaky suspicion his legs might have played a part in that too. better rolling resistance (speed) : +20% more puncture protection : -10g lighter (25-622) : improved comfort All tests were performed on the same day as the 1240 miles / 2000 km tests of the 28-622 and 32-622 endurance test tires. Wear rate of the GP 5000 looks to be very low and puncture resistance also looks to be good as we had 0 flats in the first 620 miles / 1000 km.
